Can you replace a roof in winter in Utah?
What the cold changes
Every asphalt shingle has a strip of adhesive that bonds it to the shingle below. Sun and warmth set that bond. The shingle manufacturer we install, TAMKO, says in its installation instructions that sealing “can especially be a problem if the shingles are applied in cooler months or in areas on the roof that do not receive direct sunlight,” and that in those conditions “hand sealing of the shingles is required.”
- The shingle itself. TAMKO treats anything below 40°F as cold weather for its standard shingles, and below 25°F for StormFighter FLEX, its polymer-modified shingle. TAMKO’s data sheet says FLEX can be installed at temperatures down to 25°F. That is the shingle we use on winter jobs.
- Hand-sealing. TAMKO’s method is four quarter-sized dabs of roofing cement under each shingle, pressed down. It takes longer than a summer job, and it is what keeps shingles from lifting in a winter wind before the factory strip bonds.
- Careful handling. In cold weather shingle edges and corners are easier to damage. The shingle makers’ trade association adds that cold shingles can crack if they are bent, thrown or dropped, and recommends keeping them warm before they go on.
- The ice barrier. The self-adhering membrane along the eaves and valleys only bonds to a clean, dry deck. It can’t go on over frost, ice or damp wood.
How many winter days are warm enough?
More than most people expect. These are 30-year averages from NOAA weather stations, December through February.
| City | Average January high / low | Days at 40°F or warmer, Dec–Feb |
|---|---|---|
| Logan | 32°F / 18°F | About 28 of 90 |
| Ogden | 38°F / 22°F | About 46 of 90 |
| Salt Lake City | 39°F / 24°F | About 47 of 90 |
In the Salt Lake Valley and around Ogden, about every other winter day reaches 40°F. In Cache Valley it is closer to one day in three. We don’t wait for those days. With a shingle TAMKO rates for installation down to 25°F, we install on days below 35°F. What we watch is the forecast and the roof itself. We often install right after a snowfall, when no more snow is expected for the next day or two, and we clear the snow off the roof first.
What about a metal roof?
Metal panels go on in winter too. The cold-weather cautions in the metal roofing industry’s guidance are about the sealants and the surface, not the panels: sealant tapes stiffen in the cold, and every surface has to be dry, with no frost or ice, before sealant is applied. The self-adhering underlayment beneath needs the same dry, frost-free deck it needs under shingles.
Should you wait for spring?
If the roof is leaking or storm-damaged, no. The EPA says water-damaged areas should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold. Water in the attic also soaks insulation and stains ceilings. A leak can be stopped now with a repair or a tarp, and the full replacement can follow on the first good day.
If the roof is old but dry, you have a choice.
- For going now: the roof is done before the heaviest snow and the spring storms, and any soft decking is found and fixed before it gets worse.
- For waiting: more good working days, and the factory adhesive strip bonds on its own within weeks instead of months.
How we run a winter job
- We install TAMKO StormFighter FLEX, the shingle TAMKO makes for cold-weather installation.
- We work through the winter, including days below 35°F, when the roof is dry and safe to stand on.
- We pick the day from the forecast. Often that is right after a storm, with a clear day or two ahead.
- We take off only as much old roof as we can cover the same day.
- We keep shingles warm before they go on and seal them by hand in cold weather, the way TAMKO’s instructions require.
- If there is snow on the roof, we remove it before we start. Crews are tied off.

Questions
- What temperature is too cold to replace a roof?
- There is no single cutoff. The shingle makers’ trade group gives no minimum temperature and points to each manufacturer’s instructions. TAMKO calls anything below 40°F cold weather for its standard shingles, which means extra care and hand-sealing, not a stop. For the polymer-modified shingle we use in winter, TAMKO’s line is 25°F. What does stop a job is snow or rain in the forecast, ice we can’t clear, or high wind.
- Will my shingles seal if they go on in January?
- The factory adhesive strip needs warmth and sun, so in a cold stretch it may not bond until spring. That is why shingles put on in the cold are sealed by hand with roofing cement as they are installed.
- Does a winter installation affect the shingle warranty?
- TAMKO’s wind coverage applies once the shingles were installed to its instructions and have had the chance to seal. Its warranty says shingles put on in cool seasons may not seal until the weather allows. Hand-sealing is what its instructions require in that case, so ask any roofer how they seal in the cold.
- Can you work if there is snow on the roof?
- Yes. We clear it off first. We often install the day after a snowfall, when the forecast is clear for the next day or two. The deck has to be dry before the underlayment goes down.
- My roof is leaking now. Should I wait until spring?
- No. The EPA’s guidance is to dry water-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold. A leak can be stopped the same week with a repair or a tarp, even if the full replacement waits for a better day. See emergency roof repair.
- What does a new roof cost?
- The season does not change the materials. See roof replacement cost in Utah for 2026 prices by roof size.
