What soffit and fascia do

Fascia is the board that runs along the edge of the roof. It closes off the ends of the rafters, and it is what your rain gutters hang from. Soffit is the underside of the roof overhang, between the fascia and the wall. On most homes the soffit is vented: it is where outside air gets into the attic.

Signs of soffit or fascia damage

• Peeling paint, soft wood or rot along the roof edge
• Rain gutters sagging or pulling away from the house
• Soffit panels that are sagging, loose or missing
• Birds, wasps or squirrels getting in at the roofline
• Water stains or mold on the underside of the overhang
• Ice dams at the eaves in winter, or an attic that runs hot in summer

Soffit vents and attic ventilation

An attic breathes in at the soffit and out near the ridge. When the intake is blocked, painted shut or too small, heat and moisture stay in the attic. In summer that heat works on the shingles from below. In winter it melts the snow on the roof, the meltwater refreezes at the cold eaves, and you get ice dams.

With a new roof, with rain gutters, or on its own

The best time to fix fascia is when the gutters or the roof edge are already coming off, because that is when the wood is exposed. If you are planning a roof replacement or new rain gutters, ask us to look at the soffit and fascia at the same visit. We also do it as a job on its own.
